The Woman in The Yard, the latest horror collaboration between Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, is “a pipeline to something terrifying,” the film’s lead, BAFTA and SAG Nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Till), teases in a new featurette spotlighting the project.

Jaume Collet-Serra (known for Jungle CruiseCarry-On) directed the film, which centers around a grieving family of three — mother Ramona, (Deadwyler), son Taylor (Peyton Jackson), and daughter Annie (Estella Kahiha)  — terrorized by a strange woman draped all in black (Okwui Okpokwasil) sitting in the front yard of their rural farmhouse. The woman’s intentions are unclear, but she does whisper some truly creepy lines like “Today’s the day” and hints that she enjoys devouring innocent children. As the specter draws ever closer to the front door, Ramona and her children realize they need to escape the property before nightfall, lest they fall prey to something not of this world.

The Woman in The Yard has elements that are attractive to me in a film: motherhood, farm life, country life — and then it’s disrupted.” Deadwyler explains in the video below. “It’s a pure horror-thriller.”

“It’s great to be in a film with an all-Black cast where their race is not the focus of the story, but is a layer of who they are,” Okpokwasili adds in the official production notes. “Wounded and human. They’re in their pain and they’re in their grief and it’s messy. They’re trying and they’re failing under conditions that would break most of us.”

The Woman in The Yard cast teases Blumhouse horror flick in new featurette

Written by first-time feature scribe Sam Stefanak, The Woman in The Yard also stars Russell Hornsby (Grimm) as Ramona’s late husband, David, who will most likely appear through a series of flashbacks. “Ramona’s husband was an architect, so we had an office with models and a drafting board,” says Stephanie Allain, who is a producer with Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum. “We depicted an authentic Black upper middle-class family, and we got it right. Stereotypes perpetuate fear of the other. This film is a part of the antidote.”

Deadwyler and Collet-Serra serve as executive producers alongside James Moran and Gabrielle Ebron.
