The skill system in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is fairly straightforward. Throughout the game, Antea will unlock a series of abilities – five in total – all of which come with their own skill tree, each one slightly larger than the last. Red and Antea each have their own skills and while you earn skill points for Red by simply leveling up, Antea’s skills are unlocked via essence, which can be earned by completing Haunting Cases. Here are the best skills in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, in order of when you can obtain them.

Tag-Team – Unveil

Unlockable with your very first skill point, Tag-Team is something that comes in handy throughout your entire playthrough. Light attacks are the most common type of attack you’ll perform in Banishers and this simply means that if you string four light attacks together as Red, Antea will appear and sucker punch the foe for additional damage. Can’t beat it.

Powder Keg – Unveil

Immediately after Tag-Team, you can unlock Powder Keg, which is massively helpful when dealing with big groups of enemies. You need to make some room for yourself because you need to fully charge a heavy attack to pull it off but when you do, Red will also emit an area-of-effect blast that deals physical damage. Area-of-effect attacks are a huge help in Banishers, and this isn’t the last of them in this guide.

Heavy Artillery – Leap

Making the most of the best skills in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden requires identifying which skills synergize with one another, and Heavy Artillery is a great option to go alongside Powder Keg. This simply makes Red’s charged heavy attacks deal 20% more damage, which may not seem like a big deal, but can be quite noticeable.

Barrier – Leap

So that thing we were saying about synergy between skills? Yeah, make sure you get Barrier too, because it means defeating an enemy with a heavy attack reduces the damage you take the next time you get hit by 90%. Now that’s significant.

Relentless Spirit – Leap

For the first Antea skill, go for Relentless Spirit. You want to switch back and forth between Antea and Red regularly in combat but this makes each consecutive punch attack you land without taking damage yourself increase in power by 7%. Even though Antea is weaker against specters than other enemies, this means she can have powerful enough punches to deal with ghosts too.

Spectral Ignition – Leap

The Leap skill tree may be small compared to some of the later ones, but it has some excellent skills to obtain. The final necessity is Spectral Ignition because it synergizes with Relentless Spirit in that every enemy you defeat with a punch attack emits an area-of-effect blast to hit surrounding foes. If you prefer fighting with Antea, you could opt for Spirit Stash instead to keep her active for longer, but I found Spectral Ignition to be more useful.

Kiss of Death – Outburst

In the Outburst skill tree, Kiss of Death is by far the best skill because it simply means that for every enemy you defeat with Red, he restores 10 health points, while for every enemy you defeat with Antea, she restores 10 spirit points. Passive and enormously helpful.

Protected Shooter – Outburst

The only other Outburst skill worth prioritizing is Protected Shooter. Red’s rifle is a massive tool in his arsenal thanks to its ability to deal with enemies from range, and simply defeating an enemy with the rifle reduces the next damage taken by 90%. Combine that with Barrier from earlier and you’ll hardly take any damage at all.

Crushing Leap – Ensnare

We love area-of-effect attacks so despite this being a perk for the Leap ability, it comes under the Ensnare skill tree. Crushing Leap basically means that every Leap triggers an area-of-effect attack and since it recharges very quickly, you can chain them fairly swiftly.

Sharpshooter – Ensnare

Another skill for Red’s rifle, this makes it so that defeating an enemy with the rifle increases the damage of the next shot by 50%. As you come up against stronger enemies later in the game, the rifle becomes a godsend thanks to its ability to stagger and one-hit-kill nature if you headshot specters.

Retaliation – Ensnare

Back to Red’s heavy attacks now, as Retaliation makes it so that if Red gets hit and takes damage, the next heavy attack deals 100% extra. You want to avoid being hit whenever possible, but this means you can bite back harder.

Hard As Stone – Ensnare

Mastering the art of parrying in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is essential, especially on higher difficulties, and Hard As Stone makes it even more worthwhile. If you successfully parry, the next time you take damage, it’s reduced by 90%. Simple.

Riposte – Ensnare

Combine Hard As Stone with Riposte and you have the ultimate parry cocktail, because this means post-parry attacks – what you want to follow up every single parry with – deal area-of-effect damage.

Unstoppable – Fusion

Finally, the Fusion skill tree. There are a lot of options here but since you don’t get Fusion till almost the end of the main story anyway, I’ve focused slightly less on these as they come so late into the game. Unstoppable is by far the best skill that focuses on Fusion itself though, as when Fusion ends, spirit points are fully restored. This means the optimal Antea play is to switch to her, run down her timer for a short while, then unleash Fusion and at the end, she’ll be raring to go again.

Crack Shot – Fusion

For the very last recommended skill, we have Crack Shot, another perk for Red’s rifle. It’s pretty simple too: every rifle shot you land deals area-of-effect damage. You just cannot beat it, especially against big groups.

Make sure you also check out our guides on how to break destructible walls and how to remove creeping ivy, because these path blockers are very frustrating early on. We’ve also covered which oath you should pledge to Antea: resurrect or ascend?
