A cryptic, one-word title, the haunting visual of a spinning football, and the promise of a slow descent into nightmarish madness. In other words, the teaser trailer for Universal Pictures’ HIM contains all the genre hallmarks of a classic Jordan Peele joint, with the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Get Out, Us, and Nope serving as a producer on the sports-based horror film.
Justin Tipping (Kicks, Joe vs. Carole) directed the project, working off a script he co-wrote with Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie. Former college wide-receiver Tyriq Withers (Atlanta) headlines the story as Cameron Cade, an up-and-coming quarterback who has devoted his entire life to the game of football. But on the eve of a talent scouting Combine that could change his life, Cameron is attacked by an unhinged fan and sustains a brain injury that could bring his ambitions cruelly short of the end zone.

Just when all hope seems lost, however, the distraught player receives an incredible offer of help from his personal idol: eight-time Championship quarterback and cultural icon, Isaiah White (Scary Movie alum Marlon Wayans). Cameron travels to the remote compound that White shares with his wife, Elsie (Uncut Gems‘ Julia Fox), in the hopes of a miraculous training regimen that will get him back onto the field. But as the days go by, “Isaiah’s charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for,” reads the official synopsis.
Speaking to Vanity Fair last fall, Tipping described the project as a sports movie “translated through a classic spaghetti Western lens.”

In addition to Withers, Wayans, and Fox, HIM also stars Tim Heidecker (Us) and Australian comic Jim Jefferies (The Jim Jefferies Show), while featuring the film debuts of MMA heavyweight fighter Maurice Greene and a pair of rising hip-hop artists: Guapdad 4000, and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack.
Jordan Peele is a producer on the movie via his Monkeypaw Productions banner alongside Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, and Jamal M. Watson. David Kern and Kate Oh are executive producers.
