Break out those four-leaf clovers and pots of gold, folks! St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us, and SYFY is celebrating with a day-long marathon of all the Leprechaun films, including the 2014 prequel Leprechaun: Origins.
The franchise kicked off back in 1993, with the original film helmed by director Mark Jones grossing over $8 million at the box office (more than eight times its estimated production budget). In addition to featuring an early acting turn from a pre-Friends Jenifer Anniston, the movie also cemented Warwick Davis as a cult horror icon. Davis loved the role so much, in fact, that he returned to play the titular character a total of five more times.
“It’s been taking care of me for 30 years, and it’s pretty amazing, Jones said of the unlikely IP while speaking to ScreenRant in 2023. “This thing won’t stop. The fans, I think, understood what I was trying to do. It’s kind of a comedy-horror not to be taken so seriously. It hit a chord. There are eight-year-old kids that I’ve met that love Leprechaun. They’re literally eight years old, and they’ve watched them … It finds a new audience every few years. It just won’t quit.”
While Davis has since retired from the role, he does have a golden idea for another sequel. “What I always would have loved to see happen in the Leprechaun world, though, is more leprechauns,” the actor told Dread Central in 2012. “There can’t just be him out there, so I always imagined that after he left the human world, he’d go back to his own leprechaun family, his leprechaun wife who is actually far more evil than he is. I think it would be funny to see this demented character being terrorized by his even more demented wife; and just imagine their kids!”
