There’s something comforting about seeing a house being terrorized by a supernatural entity, and then having Luke Roman (Tim Rozon) and Susan Ireland (Sarah Levy) pop up to stamp it down.

How to Watch

Watch new episodes of SurrealEstate Thursdays at 10/9c on SYFY.

In “Buckaroo,” SurrealEstate‘s Season 3 premiere tonight on SYFY, the Roman-Ireland Agency is immediately on the case of a couple desperate to get rid of their house’s ghost. The haunting is the home’s former housekeeper, who wants vengeance on the former lord of the house, who stuffed her into the chimney. All it takes to solve the case is agency associate Lomax (Elena Juatco) arriving with the former owner’s remains, which the contortionist ghost then swallows and… poof! The haunting is over and the property is cleaned by the best (only?) paranormal real estate agency around.

As wild as that is, the real surprise in “Buckaroo” came with the reveal that three years have passed since the second season finale, and the Roman-Ireland Agency is still not fully staffed after the mass exodus of August Ripley (Maurice Dean Wint), Father Phil Orley (Adam Korson), and now lawyer-in-training, Zooey L’Enfant (Savannah Basley).

SYFY WIRE got on a Zoom with Rozon to chat about getting some valuable Zooey time in this episode, and what he thinks of the new villain coming for Luke.

Tim Rozon says found family is a big theme in SurrealEstate Season 3

As the episode progresses, it’s clear that Roman and Ireland, along with Lomax, are holding down the buying/selling part of their job, but the lack of in-house researchers and the Type A energy of Zooey to run their day-to-day is taking its toll. Luckily, Zooey has agreed to come into the office when they need to train a new office manager — which is often — so the audience and the cast get some all-important Zooey time in “Buckaroo.”

“Zooey’s just such a pivotal character. We need that and that’s the thing I think we kind of learned,” Rozon said of Luke and Susan starting the season without their full staff. “We start off as Roman-Ireland, which is great because Luke realized, definitely, that he couldn’t do it by himself. He needs Susan. He’s always needed Susan, and now at least we admit it,” he laughed.

“But then it goes to show you that they need help too,” Rozon continued, while speaking of the lack of Auggie, Phil, and Zooey under their shingle. “The kind of group that we had was a found family, more than just people that come together to do the work that nobody else could do. It was really like they found their group. And when you find your group, you can try and go back, but you’ll always come back to the found family, because that’s just where you fit.”

Tim Rozon says Tyler the spirit is gunning for Luke Roman in SurrealEstate Season 3

Series creator George R. Olson opens the “Buckaroo” script by immediately introducing the season’s threat: a spirit contained inside a stuffed animal in a box at the bottom of a local lake. Tyler MacNeil (R Austin Ball), the local carpet magnate, accidentally releases the entity on a fishing trip, which enters his body and proceeds to infiltrate his life.

By the end of the episode, it’s clear the entity inside Tyler has a history with the Roman family, specifically Luke’s deceased father, Carl (Art Hindle). Disappointed with that revelation, “Tyler” goes after Luke instead, and calls to have him sell his house.

While last season’s home AI hijacking of Susan’s whole existence was scary, Rozon says Tyler represents something new and potentially more frightening this season.

“There’s nothing like impending danger to keep you on your toes,” he joked about Tyler’s introduction into Luke’s world. “But the other thing is that in Season 1 and Season 2, the ‘big bad’ of the season was a house. It was literally a physical house. As horrible as ‘Alexa’ could be, having an actual physical person like Tyler in your face every day, it raised the stakes. In that, he is after not only Luke, but the people Luke cares about the most, which is sometimes scarier and what you want to protect more.”
