Day two of the Bracket Stage centred around the biggest David and Goliath match-up of the tournament: Gen.G vs Fnatic. While both rosters were formidable in their own right, Korean rosters are known for being a cut above the rest.

Gen.G are currently the best team in their region. Not only that, but the LCK’s #1 seed has continuously outpaced reigning Worlds champs T1 in domestic tournaments for multiple splits. So only time could tell if Fnatic has outgrown their past failures enough for a world-shattering upset.

Gen.G opted for comfort picks that rallied around Chovy’s Corki while Fnatic went all out with an aggressive Talia-Wukong-Camille line-up. The LEC #2 seed had more power in the skirmish, but only time would tell if they’d use it well.

Canyon knew that their opponents had more threat in the early game, so they mostly played defensively. But it didn’t take long for the Koreans to rally on the sidelanes and take first blood. In just five minutes, Gen.G was already laying down the pressure and baiting most of Fnatic’s summoner spells.

Flawless ganks by Canyon put his team up two kills. As a result, Fnatic played respectfully until Humanoid found a good trade on botlane that equalized the score. Things started to turn around as Fnatic displayed a high level of discipline that set up some great picks. Ultimately, a great defense from the EMEA reps led to them stealing not one, but two dragons from Gen.G.

Match one slowed down into the midgame, with both MSI rosters shifting their focus towards top-side pressure and objectives. Even then, it was clear that the series hinged on teamfight potential. Dive threat could tip the scales. And isolating Chovy was crucial for a score lead.

Eventually, Fnatic had enough threat to contest a Hextech for Soul. But a two-pronged approach from Kiin and co. stopped Fnatic’s bid for their third Drake, and shifted the balance towards Gen.G. And after grabbing Nashor, Fnatic was forced to play against an LCK snowball. Game one goes to Gen.G.
