Just like in the original Final Fantasy VII that released in 1997, a big scene in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gives you the chance to join one of the members of your party on a “date” at the Gold Saucer. Rebirth reworks that scene to be less about a rivalry between Tifa and Aerith for Cloud’s affections, and more of a measure of your bond with your favorite characters and the friendships you’ve developed with them. While Tifa and Aerith’s scenes are the only romantic ones, you can also bro down with Barret, who–as usual–has some words of wisdom for Cloud as their friendship deepens. Of course, spoilers abound from here on out.

How to date Barret in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

As with the other characters, you need to increase Barret’s relationship meter is the highest among the party members when you return to the Gold Saucer and seek out Dio in Chapter 12. You’ll want Barret’s affinity for Cloud as high as you can get it before you rest at the Haunted Hotel in Ghost Square for the night, as this is when the scene begins. The good news is, you’ll be warned that you have a chance to travel the world and complete side quests before you trigger the scene, which will provide an opportunity to enhance your relationship stats.

We run down all these mechanics in our romance and relationships guide. Below, you’ll find the important moments and decisions that will affect Cloud’s relationship with Barret, and the items you should definitely complete to make sure you trigger the scene you want. Generally, though, try to remember the following as you’re developing your relationship:

  • Side quests – Try to complete the Barret ones before you rest at the Haunted Hotel in Chapter 12. You can tell which side quests involve Barret because he’ll be present in the cutscenes where the quest-giver explains what they need. You can also see which character is associated with a quest on the Quest menu; look for the character’s mugshot in the bottom-right corner of the quest’s banner on the left side of the screen.
  • Conversations – Pick the best answer out of the three options. Barret likes answers that suggest taking a hard stance against Shinra and that flatter his sense of leadership. So, you know, be nice to him, and pick dialogue choices that encourage him to keep up the fight. Whenever the party splits up, make sure to run around and talk to everyone for some of these opportunities.
  • Events – These relationship boosts are missable depending on your actions. They’re usually pretty straightforward–if you can make a choice to help Barret, do that.
  • Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities – You get an affinity boost the first time you use any Synergy Skills or Abilities that partner Barret with Cloud.

Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities

You can unlock Synergy Skills and Abilities in either Cloud or Barret’s Folio menus. After that, you’ll want to use each one at least once in combat.

  • Synergy Skill: Iron Defense
  • Synergy Skill: Mad Dash
  • Synergy Ability: Partners in Pain
  • Synergy Ability: Unified Focus

Chapter 2 Conversation: Rusty Arrow bar in Kalm

Barret: Not gonna have a drop until Seventh Heaven is back up and running

Cloud: First one’s on me. / First one will taste good.

Chapter 2 Side Quest: Life in Peril

Talk to the mayor of Kalm near the water tank in the center of town. He’ll dispatch you to go fix the mako pipes that feed the city.

Chapter 4 Conversation: Under Junon inn

Barret: What do you think Yuffie wants with us?

Cloud: Your autograph. / To join Avalanche.

Chapter 4 Side Quest: Words Won’t Do

After the scene with Yuffie at the water’s edge, talk with Rhonda near the entrance to Under Junon from the surrounding area. She’ll send you to the Crow’s Nest on an escort mission.

Chapter 6 missable bonus: Costa del Sol beach battle

When Shinra forces arrive at the beach, you can choose between the duo of Aerith and Barret, or Tifa and Red XIII. Help Barret and Aerith for a relationship bonus for both.

Chapter 6 Conversation: After Costa del Sol beach battle

Once the fight is over, find Barret on the stairs.

Barret: I couldn’t do a damn thing for those poor bastards.

Cloud: You tried. That’s all that matters. / This is on Hojo.

Chapter 7 missable bonus: Mine cart ride

After the portion where Barret, Yuffie, and Tifa head out to unlock the way forward, you’ll get control of Cloud back. As you follow the tracks out, you’ll have a chance to throw a switch to give the other team an adventurous ride or a smooth one. Barret prefers the adventurous ride (Yuffie wants the smooth one), so choose the option he’ll appreciate for a relationship boost.

Chapter 9 Side Quest: Missing Mr. Birdie

Once you’ve completed Chapter 8, head back to North Corel and talk to the kids near the gate. They’ll send you out to the desert to find Cloud Jr., the baby chocobo you previously rescued.

Chapter 9 Side Quest: Pursuit of Perfection

Talk to the independent weapon smith, whose house is out in the jungle north of Gongaga. You can find it on your way to town.

Chapter 9 Conversation: Central Gongaga, near Cissnei’s house

Barret: Wonder what kind of stuff we’d end up growing here.

Cloud: Mushrooms. / Onions.

Chapter 10 Conversation: Cosmo Canyon, River of Lights ceremony

Barret: So what, we just sit here and “theorize”?

Cloud: No, we fight. / Whadda you wanna do?

Chapter 11 Conversation: Nibelheim inn

Barret: We gotta do something, right?

Cloud: Hell yeah you’re right. Screw them. / I wanna know why they put the robes here.

Chapter 12 Side Quest: Lament of the Damned

Talk to the Nibelheim director in the town hall before leaving, and he’ll dispatch you to Shinra Manor to do some ghostbusting.

Chapter 12 Side Quest: Hustle and Grind

Once you have the ability to travel to the whole world map, return to Kalm and find the Beck’s Business stall, then help the crew complete a pest control gig.

Chapter 12 Side Quest: Escape from Endless Writer’s Block

After you can freely travel the whole world map, return to Gongaga and head to the chocobo stalls at the south end of town to speak with Mabel to help her deal with her writer’s block.

Barret Gold Saucer date

Generally, it seems that the most important factor in who shows up for your Gold Saucer date scene is how many side quests you’ve completed with each character, so an easy way to game things in Barret’s favor is to complete all his quests while leaving a few undone for other characters. You can wait until Chapter 12 to hit these, as you’ll have full access to the whole world map to double-back and complete anything you missed.

To be 100% certain, you can press the L1 button to see the color of the “smiley face” above each companion, which tells you their affinity level with Cloud. If you do it right, he’ll be the one to knock on Cloud’s door. This is followed by two sequences:

  • Event Square: Opera – Barret plays the role of the Dragon King Varvados, the villain. At the end of the play, a certain someone will sing for the audience, which also grants a relationship increase for all characters.
  • Skywheel – Barret will accompany Cloud on the Skywheel, which leads to Barret sharing a story and some advice with Cloud. You’ll also gain another relationship boost with Barret.

At this point, you’re already done with the Gold Saucer date, so the relationship bonuses are moot and you’re free to finish any side quests you left hanging.
