Big news for fighting game fans
Evo Japan–the Eastern equivalent of America’s largest fighting game tournament–took place over the weekend, with games like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive, and more taking the spotlight. Along with the action, multiple fighting game developers provided updates for fans, which ranged from a first look at new characters to a full roadmap of content.
This gallery is a collection of the biggest news coming out of Evo Japan. Four games had a new character added to their rosters–two of them are set to launch next month–while another detailed a list of updates coming in its first season of content. With everything announced at Evo Japan and with Evo 2024 in Las Vegas a few short months away, the FGC will have plenty to sink its teeth into in their fighting games of choice for the foreseeable future.
Akuma drops into Street Fighter 6
Though we’ve known the Raging Demon was coming to Street Fighter 6 for a while now–we even got a brief glimpse at his World Tour appearance last month–Evo Japan presented the first look at Akuma in action. His trademark style has a few new tricks, but all of the hallmarks, including the most impressive Shun Goku Satsu we’ve seen yet, all make an appearance in the video. Akuma arrives in Street Fighter 6 on May 22.
Tekken 8 Season 1 Roadmap unveiled
Tekken project heads Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray presented a full roadmap for Tekken 8’s first season, which includes a laundry list of content through free updates. New balance patches, photo mode, online practice mode, and a new story chapter featuring Eddy Gordo are all on the way throughout the year.
Lidia joins Tekken 8
The Tekken 8 trailer didn’t stop there, as we also got a small teaser for the next character to join the Tekken 8 roster. Lidia Sobieska, the in-universe prime minister of Poland and the final character added to Tekken 7, has been confirmed as the second DLC character for Tekken 8, following the aforementioned Eddy.
Slayer is coming to Guilty Gear Strive
The third season of Guilty Gear Strive content is coming to a close with Slayer, the “Laid-Back and Dignified Vampire,” who will be added to the Strive roster on May 30. His reveal trailer showed off a few of his flashiest moves, which should look familiar to longtime Guilty Gear players. Arc System Works also confirmed that Season 4 is currently in “active development” after announcing it last month, though no specific details on its contents were disclosed.
Marco added to Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves
The newest fighting game on the block saw the reveal of the next character coming to its burgeoning roster, as Marco Rodrigues–who some older player familiar with Garou: Mark Of The Wolves may know as Khushnood Butt–has been confirmed for 2025’s Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves. This marks the first time Marco has been playable since his first appearance in Garou, though he has seen some background cameos since then.
Illaoi makes her 2XKO debut
Finally, Riot Games traveled to Japan with a new playable public demo of its upcoming fighter 2XKO–which features characters, stages, and more from the League Of Legends franchise. The demo’s roster included Illaoi, the Kraken Princess, who the public could check out for the first time ever during the event.
