July’s big releases
It’s nearly July, and with every flip of the calendar, the Netflix catalog expands with more movies and TV shows. This is no different for July 2024, as the month sees a number of notable releases, including Netflix original shows and films and licensed content.
Here in this gallery we’re rounding up some of the biggest and most anticipated releases for July This includes a wide array of content, including the next Beverly Hills Cop movie and the newest (and final) season of Cobra Kai. Subscribers are also getting all six seasons of Lost, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, Back to the Future 1-3, and the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy, along with many other titles.
Obviously this is all subjective, and your tastes may vary. But we like these TV shows and movies, and you might too. You can find the full list of what’s new on Netflix in the last slide.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – July 3
We cannot vouch for the quality of this newest Beverly Hills Cop movie, but it’s the latest entry in a popular series so no doubt fans are excited to see Eddie Murphy back for another adventure. The last time we saw Murphy playing the Foley character was [MOVIE] om [YEAR]. Judge Reinhold and Paul Reiser return to reprise their characters, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon join the cast in new roles.
American Psycho – July 1
If you’re in the mood for a pretty messed-up film, 2000’s American Psycho might be just what you’re looking for in July. The Mary Harron-directed film, based on the book of the same name, stars Christian Bale as investment banker Patrick Bateman who is a serial killer on the side. The film also stars Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, and Reese Witherspoon.
Back to the Future 1, 2, 3 – July 1
What’s old is new again in July with the Back to the Future trilogy from director Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael J. Fox comes to Netflix in July. The films are iconic cinema and well worth a re-watch, or if you’ve never seen them, now is the time!
Big Daddy – July 1
Long before Adam Sandler made movies for Netflix, he made them for theaters, and 1999’s Big Daddy remains one of Sandler’s most popular and beloved films. Sandler plays a down-on-his-luck man who adopts a boy (played by Cole Sprouse) to impress his ex-girlfriend but ends up bonding with the boy and learning about himself in the process. And now you can watch it on Netflix, alongside his other movies, like 2024’s Spaceman, in which Sandler plays an astronaut on a solo mission in space.
Call Me By Your Name – July 1
Director Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 film Call Me By Your Name stars Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer in a love story set in 1980s Italy. Chalamet earned an Oscar nomination for his starring role in the film, which won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. Hammer’s career fell off a cliff after this amid reports of physical and emotional abuse. In a supporting role in Call Me By Your Name, Michael Stuhlbarg turned in a memorable performance, including a haunting and heartbreaking monologue about what it is to love and be loved.
Easy A – July 1
2010’s romantic comedy Easy A stars Emma Stone as Olive Penderghast, a high school teenager who helps her classmates get popular by allowing them to claim they had sex with her, in exchange for gift cards to retail stores. The story takes a number of twists and turns and ultimately has a positive, hopeful message. The film also stars Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow, and Stanley Tucci.
Lost Seasons 1-6 – July 1
One of the most iconic TV shows ever, Lost, comes to Netflix on July 1. All six seasons of the show are coming, which means viewers can take the entire journey–from the initial plane crash to the controversial ending. The show is known for its many twists and turns (and plot holes!) and if you’ve already seen it, July could be a good chance to go back and see if you have changed your mind about the ending.
Matilda – July 1
1996’s Matilda, based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name, comes to Netflix in July. Directed by Danny DeVito (who also stars), the movie follows the story of Matilda (Mara Wilson), a child with psychokinetic abilities. The movie wasn’t originally a box office success, but like other films of the time, it became more and more popular on home video and eventually streaming.
Spider-Man 1-3 – July 1
The original three Spider-Man films from director Sam Raimi come to Netflix on July 1. Originally released in 2002, 2004, and 2007, these films were box office smashes and helped elevate make comic book movies popular on a mass scale. Tobey Maguire stars in all three as Spider-Man, with Kirsten Dunst portraying Mary Jane and James Franco as Peter’s friend Harry Osborn. The films featured villains played by Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), and Thomas Haden Church (Sandman). These are fun, silly movies.
The Karate Kid – July 1
1984’s The Karate Kid comes to Netflix in July, and we cannot wait. The film kicked off what is now an iconic series, featuring Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, a teen from New Jersey who works with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to become a martial arts champion. The film also stars William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence.
Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 1 – July 18
The end of the beginning kicks off July 18 with the first part of the sixth and final season of the TV series Cobra Kai. The first five episodes arrive July 18, with the next five coming in November and then the final five in 2025 to close things out. For anyone just catching up, Cobra Kai is a continuation of the film series that picks up decades after the movies and focuses on the life and times of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).
