Any veteran of the RuneScape franchise knows how invaluable runes are. They are used to perform dozens of crucial and useful actions in RuneScape, and no matter how many you have, you could always use more. While RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a completely different game from the famous MMOs of the franchise, it still makes use of runes in a huge way.

Naturally, the same types of runes from the MMOs have been placed in Dragonwilds. However, there are not nearly as many runes in the current version of the survival game as there are in the MMOs, and the way you go about obtaining runes has been slightly altered. So, whether you’re a RuneScape veteran or a new player entirely, you’ll need a brief explanation about how to get runes and all of the runes you can acquire during your time in Dragonwilds.

Below, we’ll list the currently available runes in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, how to craft them, and what you need to do to gain the ability to craft each one.

All runes in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Currently, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has seven runes–though technically only six for now, as we’ll explain below. While this is a fraction of the runes you can find in the MMO version of RuneScape, the game is still in early access, and more content is coming soon. We can expect more runes, and in turn more spells, to be on the way in the near future as the developers add more content to Dragonwilds.

For now, though, here are all of the runes you can craft and use in Dragonwilds:

  • Air Rune
  • Astral Rune
  • Nature Rune
  • Fire Rune
  • Earth Rune
  • Law Rune
  • Water Rune

As a note, I looted a Water Rune from a chest during a quest in Dragonwilds. However, there is no use for the Water Rune as far as I can tell, or a way to craft it at the time of writing.

Using the six other runes, you’re able to cast every single one of the spells available in the game, but you’ll need to know how to craft them, which we explain below.

How to craft Runes in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Runes are crafted through the Rune Altar in Dragonwilds. The Rune Altar requires Rune Essence to create all six types of runes, so you don’t need a specific type of essence to make a certain rune. One Rune Essence produces 10 runes in return, so you can quickly stack all six types of runes if you’re able to harvest a solid amount of essence.

Rune Essence is acquired by mining it at special locations around the map. These locations are marked by pink mist and floating rocks that have a blue glow to them. Near these locations, you’ll find Rune Essence rocks on the ground, which you can mine using a pickaxe. Once you have a stack of Rune Essence, bring it back to your base and bring up the build menu.

Under the “Crafting” tab, you can see the recipe for the Rune Altar, which requires the following resources to build:

  • x12 Stone
  • x4 Rune Essence

Once the Rune Altar has been built, interact with it and you’ll be able to craft runes. However, you only have access to the runes according to your Runecrafting skill level in Dragonwilds.

All Runecrafting levels in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Your Runecrafting level determines what runes you have access to for crafting. The higher your level, the more runes you can craft at the Rune Altar. By default, every player has access to Air and Astral Runes, so you don’t need to level Runecrafting for those runes.

However, each type of rune after those two requires you to be at a certain Runecrafting level. You can see what level you need to be to craft all six types of runes below:

  • Air Runes – level 1
  • Astral Runes – level 1
  • Earth Runes – level 11
  • Fire Runes – level 13
  • Law Runes – level 16
  • Nature Runes – level 19

Reaching level 19 Runecrafting isn’t too difficult. You can improve your skill by mining Rune Essence and crafting runes at a Rune Altar. As long as you’re mining enough essence, you can increase Runecrafting by multiple levels every time you go to craft runes. In RuneScape: Dragonwilds early access, the max Runecrafting level is 27, but the max level only unlocks a new spell to learn, not a new rune to craft.

How to use Runes in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Finally, when you have an inventory full of runes ready to be used in Dragonwilds, you can then decide what spells to cast. Spells are unlocked by progressing all of the skills in the game, which you can see by pressing “K.” Every skill unlocks at least one spell to use, even the harvesting skills like Woodcutting and Mining.

As you unlock new skills, you can use them by pressing “Q” to bring up the spell wheel. This allows you to see all of your available spells and pick which one to use. Different spells require different runes to cast, which you can see by hovering over each of the spells. Most of the spells are fairly useful, both in combat and exploration.

However, they all have some sort of cooldown attached to them, so you can’t spam the spells like you can in the MMO version of RuneScape. You can view all of the available skills in RuneScape: Dragonwilds by pressing “P.”
