After massive layoffs across Microsoft and its gaming studios, there hasn’t been a lot of good news for the Xbox team. It’s small comfort to those who lost their jobs, but Microsoft had a dominant month in May 2025 with four out of the top five best-selling games in the US.

Circana has shared its report for video games sold in May, and the only game in the top five that wasn’t published by Microsoft was Elden Ring Nightreign, which debuted on the list at No. 1.

Doom: The Dark Ages had a strong debut at No. 2 for Microsoft and Bethesda, with Forza Horizon 5, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 rounding out the top 5. These cross-platform releases on PS5 have apparently made a sizable impact. Microsoft’s perennial best-seller, Minecraft, slipped to the seventh slot in May.

The only other new additions to chart in May were EA’s F1 25 at No. 15, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 at No. 19. Most of the other titles have been placing in the top 20 for months, although Star Wars Battlefront 2 made a surprising leap from No.135 to No. 12 in just a single month as fans continue to make the case for Star Wars Battlefront 3.
