Nowadays, if a movie ends up with a PG-13 rating, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) allows one instance of the F-word. Any more than that, and the film instantly finds itself in R-rated territory.

The theatrical cut of M3GAN 2.0 (now playing in theaters everywhere; get tickets here) is no exception to the rule, with the sequel containing a single use of America’s favorite swear word. But where the first movie gave the sole curse to M3GAN’s first human victim, Brandon (Jack Cassidy), the sequel rightly bestows the sailor-mouthed honor upon the title character, voiced by Jenna Davis.

Voice of M3GAN didn’t know she’d get the sequel’s only F-bomb

Speaking with SYFY WIRE over Zoom, Davis admits she didn’t know for certain whether she’d be the one to drop the film’s only F-bomb until seeing the finished movie at the world premiere. “I assumed as I was reading that it would probably be given to M3GAN [because] anything that comes out of her mouth is very unpredictable and shocking. And so, I assumed it would probably happen,” the actress explains.

M3GAN’s memorable vulgarity arrives shortly after she’s given a temporary body by her wary creator, Gemma Forrester (Allison Williams), who doesn’t trust the rogue machine to not go on another killing spree. As such, M3GAN’s A.I. consciousness is placed into a harmless Moxie doll, prompting the unimpressed character to ask: “What the f— is this?”

“When we were recording, we’d do multiple takes,” Davis continues. “Sometimes, instead of saying the actual word itself, I’d say something funny, like ‘fa-doodle-cakes’ or something else that they can use. So I never really know what they’re going to use until … I hadn’t seen the whole film from start to finish until the premiere. They wouldn’t show it to me, they wanted to keep it a surprise. I was shocked to know. I was like, ‘Oh, okay — M3GAN got it!’ [laughs]”

Hopefully, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster will eventually release an unrated cut of M3GAN 2.0 like it did with the first movie, which packed in more cursing and overt violence than its mainstream counterpart.
