Fan favorite actor Julian McMahon, best known to genre fans for memorable roles in The WB’s original Charmed series and the early 2000s run of Fantastic Four films, has died at the age of 56.

According to Deadline, McMahon passed away on July 2 in Clearwater, Florida following a private battle with cancer.

“With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” Kelly McMahon, McMahon’s wife, said in a statement. “Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible. We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.”

Genre fans likely got their first introduction to McMahon in The WB’s magical fantasy series Charmed (revisit the full series now on Peacock), where he played the half-demon and half-human character Cole Turner in the series’ 3-5 seasons, along with a guest star stint in Season 7. He was introduced as an antagonist for the Charmed ones, but eventually fell for one of the sisters and becomes an ally (and sometimes enemy again – this is a genre show, after all).

Along with his stint on Charmed, McMahon also played the OG big screen Doctor Doom in the 2005 Fantastic Four film, and reprised the role in the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Say what you will about those two Fantastic Four films being a bit of a mixed bag critically, but there’s no denying McMahon chewed up the role of Victor Von Doom.

Outside of his genre work, McMahon had an extensive career in the soap opera space, along with starring roles in hit shows including Nip/Tuck, FBI: Most Wanted
