The extreme lack of conscience necessary to wield the Necrosword and set off on a campaign of divine slaughter is nothing compared to the mother of all wedgies and the public humiliation that comes with it.

Upon accepting the role of Gorr the God Butcher in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder (airing on SYFY this weekend), actor Christian Bale was quite concerned about the villain’s costume — or lack thereof.

Christian Bale shares his biggest concern with playing Gorr in Thor: Love and Thunder

“You sort of go, ‘I know what he does.’ It’s right there in the name, isn’t it? But I did make the mistake of Googling him and, oh no! [In the comics] he runs around in a G-string all the time,” Bale recalled in a 2022 interview with GamesRadar. “And I thought, ‘They don’t have the right man for that!’ And then Taika quickly dispelled any notions of running around in that. But I always did think what he could do with this in front of a bluescreen – he could chuck on whatever he wants later on.”

He said something similar to The Wrap, citing another concern with Gorr’s muscular physique in the comics. “I was in the middle of making another film where I was really quite skinny,” he added. “I said, ‘Dude, nobody wants to see me in a G-string.’ And there’s no point in working out at all because you can’t compete with Chris [Hemsworth].”

Thankfully, Bale had nothing to worry about, with his portrayal of the character not only being cited as one of the movie’s high points, but also drawing favorable comparisons to Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight.

Created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, Gorr made his comics debut in a 2013 issue of Thor: God of Thunder. Disillusioned by the indifference of the gods to suffering throughout the universe, the character decides to murder all deities with the Necrosword, a weapon created by Symbiote progenitor Knull (that last bit is not mentioned in the MCU film). And yes, that scant fashion sense, consisting of a shroud-like loincloth, is a big part of the villain’s usual design on paper. Since that might have looked a little silly in live-action, Gorr’s eventual outfit was redesigned to look more like an Ancient Roman toga.

“There were many conversations about Gorr, especially with me and Taika,” Love and Thunder costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo told The Credits. “We did so many sketches, but also Taika decided he wanted him in white. He wanted to portray Gorr in an archaic and ancient way, and how ancient people mourned. He had lost his daughter, so all the color had gone out of his life. This is a metamorphosis that happens to many people who are in great pain in their lives, a sort of in-between place where none of the colors of life exists. Christian embraced it all.”

Thor: Love and Thunder airs on SYFY tomorrow, Saturday, April 12, at 10:00 p.m. ET. Click here for complete scheduling info!
