Zenless Zone Zero lets you take control of several agents, with each one having their own set of skills. However, you also have to consider certain intricacies to make use of their full potential when they’re in a group. Here’s our guide on the best team comps in Zenless Zone Zero.
Zenless Zone Zero best team comps – Ideal party and squad setups
Our Zenless Zone Zero best team comps guide discusses a few viable options when building your three-person squad. We do have to take note of some restrictions, namely the additional perk/passive that each agent has. This buff can greatly improve their capabilities in battle, but it can only be active if someone in the squad (a) belongs to the same faction, or (b) has the same elemental attribute.
Understanding squad setups: Factions and elemental attributes
There are some tidbits to remember if you want to build the best team comps in Zenless Zone Zero. Ideally, you each character’s additional perk must be active. If you cannot meet the requirements due to restrictions, then your main DPS’ additional passive perk should be active at the very least.
- Mono element – Unlike Genshin Impact, which is heavily reliant on elemental reactions, combat in Zenless Zone Zero is more about creating a mono-elemental team (i.e. all Fire or all Ice characters). This also ensures that the additional passives of your agents remain active in battle.
- Same faction but mixed elements – Alternatively, you can have a mix of agents that are part of the same faction even if a few don’t have the same elemental attribute. Likewise, you can look for potential synergies among characters.
- Character specialty – Since you can only have three agents in a team, you need to consider their roles/specializations:
- One character must be the main DPS, preferably Attack-type agents.
- Having one Stun-type agent for faster daze build-up and chain attack triggers is often a good idea.
- The last slot can be for a Support-type agent–either buffing your allies or debuffing enemies.
Mono Ice: Ellen, Lycaon, and Soukaku
The Ice element causes freeze (immobilize), shatter (movement interruption and damage), and frostbite (increased crit damage taken), you’re bound to incapacitate hostiles easily. This makes a Mono Ice squad the best team comp in Zenless Zone Zero.
- Attack: Ellen – Ice element; Victoria Housekeeping Co.
- Stun: Lycaon – Ice element; Victoria Housekeeping Co.
- Support: Soukaku – Ice element; Hollow Special Operations Section 6
We consider both Ellen and Lycaon as top-tier characters. Ellen’s ridiculous speed, multi-hit combos, and high-damage attacks quickly bring down your foes. Lycaon, meanwhile, has rapid animations and sequences that cause tremendous daze build-up, ensuring chain attack after chain attack. Finally, there’s Soukaku, an unlockable free character, whose passive and additional perk boost ATK and Ice damage respectively.
Free-to-play Squad: Nicole, Anby, and Billy
For those who just want to focus on free-to-play (F2P) gaming, look no further than the Cunning Hares squad:
- Attack: Billy – Physical element; Cunning Hares
- Stun: Anby – Electric element; Cunning Hares
- Support: Nicole – Ether element; Cunning Hares
All three agents are unlocked at the start of the campaign, requiring no monetary investment at all. The idea is to have Anby do her lightning-infused strike on the third hit of her combo, with the extra daze likely triggering a chain attack. This lets you swap to Nicole for her Ether Shellacking ability, spawning a vortex that pulls in enemies. Lastly, Billy can just shoot every enemy in the room when possible.
Physical Prowess: Nekomiya, Nicole, and flex
Those lucky enough to obtain Nekomiya from the standard banner can unleash her full potential:
- Attack: Nekomiya – Physical element; Cunning Hares
- Support: Nicole – Ether element; Cunning Hares
- Flex #1: Anby – Electric element; Cunning Hares
- Flex #2: Corin – Physical element; Victoria Housekeeping Co.
The idea is for Nekomiya to stay on the field for prolonged periods, as her quick swipes shred enemies and her ridiculous pounces cover a lot of ground already. Nicole is the top Support-type option for her, especially with her vortex/pull abilities.
As for the third slot, you can go with Anby–she’s a Stun-type and part of the Cunning Hares faction already. However, it’s also worth noting that Nekomiya’s attack animations are so fast that she can build up the daze meter effectively, too. Alternatively, there’s Corin, who’s far from the best character in the game. She does make up for it once you’re able to unlock Cinema rank 2 (C2), which provides a physical resistance stacking debuff. Gain more stacks as Corin, then quickly swap to Nekomiya to rip apart foes with her abilities.
Electric Blitz: Grace, Rina, and flex
The Electric element offers one of the best team comps in Zenless Zone Zero. The squad should consist of the following agents:
- Anomaly: Grace – Electric element; Belobog Heavy Industries
- Support: Rina – Electric element; Belobog Heavy Industries
- Flex: Any Stun-type
Grace and Rina are an ideal duo if you’re able to obtain them both via the standard banner. Grace, an Anomaly specialist, can strengthen elemental debuffs or trigger procs to occur frequently. Her playstyle is complemented by Rina, who uses magic to hit foes from a distance, while also improving penetration (i.e. increases damage dealt by ignoring the target’s defense).
You’re going to alternate between the two for the most part, so the third slot (i.e. flex) can be any character that helps build-up daze effectively. Anby might seem like a good choice, but you do need to complete her combo string, which can be a hassle when swapping frequently.
Belobog Brat and Bear: Koleda, Ben, and flex
There’s a particularly unique team up that’s not obvious at first glance:
- Stun: Koleda – Fire element; Belobog Heavy Industries
- Defense: Ben – Fire element; Belobog Heavy Industries
- Flex: Any Fire element or Support-type
Koleda is an odd character in that she’s a Stun-type that deals high damage, albeit with slower attack animations. To make the most out of her potential, you should also have Ben Bigger in the squad. Ben and Koleda have hidden team-up abilities that trigger in battle.
You can then add Lucy in the third slot (i.e. Fire element and Support-type) for her off-field damage/minions, or Rina (i.e. Electric element and Support-type) for her penetration bonus. Either option should be fine as all three agents have their additional perks active.
Mono Fire: Soldier 11, Koleda, and Lucy
To be frank, the Fire element isn’t as useful as Ice or Ether at this current stage of the game. But you might want to try it out if you have the following agents:
- Attack: Soldier 11 – Fire element; Obol Squad
- Stun: Koleda – Fire element; Belobog Heavy Industries
- Support: Lucy – Fire element; Sons of Calydon
Since there’s no other Obol Squad agent yet, Soldier 11 can only be used effectively if you have another Fire-based character in the group. This grants her bonus Fire damage (up to 32.5% against stunned foes). Lucy is a decent Support-type pick, since her minions can roam around and strike enemies even while she’s off-field. Then, there’s Koleda, who smacks around targets to incapacitate them.
Ether Epicness: Zhu Yuan, Nicole, and flex
The limited-time banner for the second half of the version 1.0 phase introduces a new 5-star agent. This allows for one of the best team comps in Zenless Zone Zero:
- Attack: Zhu Yuan – Ether element; New Eridu Public Security
- Support: Nicole – Ether element; Cunning Hares
- Flex: Any Stun
By the time version 1.0 is over, there should be two Ether element agents in the game. Nicole, who’s available from the start, remains one of the best agents due to her vortex field abilities. Then, there’s Zhu Yuan, who boasts astounding quick hits, high damage, and combo sequences.
Since it’s unclear when Zhu Yuan’s NEPS faction mate Qingyi becomes available, the only means of activating her additional passive is by having Nicole in the group. The third slot can be for Lycaon, as his rapid punches and kicks that build up daze are unlikely to interfere with Zhu Yuan’s offensive sequences.
