This year’s finalists for the Strong Museum’s Video Game Hall of Fame have been announced, highlighting another selection of influential titles. Like previous years, the nominees include games from across multiple eras, including classics like Asteroids, Elite, and Metroid.
Released in 1979, Asteroids made the list for its challenging gameplay and intense sound effects, while Elite was praised for being an early pioneer of 3D graphics. Nintendo’s Metroid made the cut thanks to innovative gameplay, an alien atmosphere, and a memorable soundtrack. Moving to the ’90s, the Strong Museum highlighted Myst for its puzzles and adoption of CD-ROM technology, Resident Evil for popularizing the survival-horror genre, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater for bringing the sport and culture of skateboarding into the mainstream.
Guitar Hero mixed licensed music and plastic instruments to create a new wave of rhythm-based gaming with wide appeal when it first launched in 2005, You Don’t Know Jack reimagined the game show format as a social video game experience, and Ultima helped define the computer role-playing genre during the early days of PC gaming.
